How much is forklift training in Temecula, CA through Employee Forklift Training?

Training prices for certified employee forklift training programs in Temecula, California generally hover right around $125 per person per different type of powered industrial truck that your employees need training on.  Don’t get taken advantage of by paying higher training costs by training providers who hype up OSHA enforcement and penalty possibilities.

Does OSHA allow employers to train and certify their own forklift and material handling equipment instructors in safe equipment operation?

Yes!  Both Federal and State plan OSHA codes permit employers to have their own employees certified as instructors.  They simply need to have the knowledge, skills and ability to appropriately present a structured course that involves forklift and material handling equipment operators complete an education component of the training.  This could include classroom/lecture, online or a combination of the two.  Forklift and Material handling equipment certification classes performed onsite also shall include an introduction to the truck and a hands-on, behind-the-wheel training to include coaching and observation.  OSHA compliant forklift and powered industrial truck instructor certification classes should have an instructors kit to assist the instructor in the delivery of the class, capturing required training documentation, issuing certificates of completion and operator licenses, training videos and more in English and in the language the employee is most comfortable with, i.e. Spanish, Tagalog, etc.

Does OSHA mandate how long onsite forklift operator training should be?

No, OSHA does not spell out a specified amount of time that training programs are required to meet.  OSHA code does spell out a list of training topics that must be covered to ensure forklift training is compliant with their expectation to ensure your employee forklift certification training is complete and comprehensive.  In general, classes should take no less than four (4) hours but more frequently run about six (6) hours.  This time varies with the number of forklift drivers to be trained and the number of fork trucks available to train on. OSHA does require a formal instruction session (Classroom/online), hands-on equipment orientation, hands-on equipment training and operator evaluation, making online only training insufficient to meet OSHA's training requirements.

Does OSHA require material handling equipment/powered industrial forklift operators to have a valid driver’s license in Temecula, California?

Temecula, CA is covered under a State of California approved state plan covered by Title 8.  California OSHA has no requirement that a forklift operator have a valid motor vehicle driver’s license. OSHA does require that every forklift operator be trained and certified to operate the powered industrial truck in the workplace, and that the operator’s performance be evaluated on the provisions of 1910.178(l)(3) every three years, unless the operator has been involved in an accident, he/she is observed operating unsafely, something in the workplace changes significantly or when the employee is required to operate a slightly different type of truck than they trained on - provided it is the same type of truck, i.e. a sit-down counterbalanced truck. The employer must have a record documenting that the driver has successfully completed the training. That is the only operating “license” required by OSHA.

Is a vision/hearing test required before an employee may operate a forklift in Temecula, California?

OSHA’s 29CFR1910.178 Powered Industrial Truck Standard does not have any vision/hearing specific guidelines for employee forklift operators. However, even if OSHA doesn’t specifically address this issue in their code, there are several safety concerns and performance issues that need to be fully evaluated with the operations of individual employers.

Federal OSHA has issued letters of interpretation stating that employers are required to evaluate if full vision is required for their operations and recommends employers seek appropriate evaluation from medical professionals to evaluate the employee for safe operation. (Reference: October 20, 1976 OSHA Letter of Interpretation, edited in 2000.)  And, OSHA has issued other interpretations addressing both visually and hearing-impaired potential forklift operators.

In general, OSHA considers physical impairments on individual basis. If an employer can show that an impaired employee could be a danger to themselves and/or others when operating equipment, the employer has the right and duty to not allow that employee to become a certified equipment operator. If the employer was aware of the employee's impairment, but allowed the employee to operate the vehicle, OSHA could cite the employer under the General Duty Clause, which guarantees a safe and healthful workplace for employees, guests, visitors and contractors.

Are all Temecula, California employers near me required to follow Cal-OSHA regulations?

All Temecula, California employers, regardless of size, are required to follow OSHA’s safety regulations as it relates to forklifts and other powered industrial trucks.  If your state has a State plan approved by OSHA, like California, then employers are required to follow the regulations approved under Title 8 code.  If your state does not have a federally approved state plan then employers will be required to follow OSHA’s code, in this case, for General Industry employers it would be 29 CFR 1910.178.

Does OSHA provide forklift certification to employees in Temecula, CA?

No, OSHA does not provide any forklift certification training classes.  OSHA does not issue any licenses or certificates verifying any type of forklift training.  Forklift certification classes near you would deliver training that is compliant with OSHA’s employee forklift training requirements.  Any training provider claiming to deliver OSHA certified employee forklift training is not being honest with you.
